Are electrician estimates free? Sometimes. At Coy Electric, we generally provide free estimates for clearly defined, planned electrical projects. When the cause of a problem is unknown and an electrician must test the system to determine what is wrong, it is normally handled as a paid service call.
The difference comes down to one question: Do we already know what work needs to be completed, or do we first need to diagnose the problem?
When Is an Electrician Estimate Free?
A free electrician estimate usually makes sense when you have a clearly defined project. We can review the scope, determine the labor and materials involved, and prepare a quote before the work begins.
Examples may include:
- An electrical panel upgrade
- An EV charger installation
- A new circuit for a hot tub, heat pump, or appliance
- New indoor or outdoor lighting
- Electrical work for a remodeling project
- A planned commercial electrical upgrade
Depending on the project, we may ask for photos or schedule an on-site job walk. Photos can sometimes help us understand the scope, but certain projects still need to be inspected in person.
When Is an Electrical Service Call Billed Hourly?
A paid service call is normally appropriate when the cause of an electrical problem is unknown. The electrician must perform electrical troubleshooting before knowing what repair is required.
Common examples include:
- A circuit breaker that keeps tripping
- An outlet or part of a home that suddenly loses power
- A GFCI outlet that will not reset
- Lights that flicker or work intermittently
- An appliance that repeatedly loses power
- A smoke detector or electrical device that is malfunctioning
We regularly hear from customers who want a repair quote based on one of these symptoms. The challenge is that the symptom does not reveal the cause.
A tripping breaker, for example, could be caused by an overloaded circuit, damaged wiring, a faulty appliance, a loose connection, or a problem with the breaker itself. Testing is required before an electrician can recommend the correct repair.
How Are Troubleshooting Calls Charged?
Troubleshooting is part of the electrical work—not simply preparation for it.
The first hour includes the electrician’s initial service-call and diagnostic time. If the problem requires more time, additional troubleshooting may be billed hourly. Materials used for the repair may also be added to the final invoice.
Because rates can change, Coy Electric will explain the current service-call and hourly rates before scheduling the appointment.

Why Can’t Troubleshooting Be Quoted in Advance?
An electrician may need to inspect the panel, test the circuit, open electrical boxes, check connections, and isolate connected equipment. Until that work begins, it may be impossible to know how long the diagnosis will take or what materials will be required.
This is why an unknown electrical problem cannot always be estimated like a planned installation. You are paying for the electrician’s experience and the testing necessary to safely locate the problem.
Should You Request an Estimate or Schedule a Service Call?
Request a free estimate when you already know the project you want completed, such as adding a circuit, replacing a panel, or installing an EV charger.
Schedule a paid service call when something has stopped working and you need an electrician to determine why.
When you contact us, describe the symptoms, when the problem started, and which areas or devices are affected. We will help you determine which type of appointment makes the most sense.
