An electrical service upgrade increases the amount of power available to your property. Older homes were wired for a few lights, a range, and a television — not for EV chargers, heat pumps, hot tubs, induction ranges, home offices, and finished basements all running off the same service. A residential electrical service upgrade addresses the equipment that carries power from the utility connection through the meter and into the main panel.
It helps to separate three projects that often get lumped together:
The distinction that matters most: a service upgrade usually includes a new panel, but installing a new panel does not by itself increase the property's service capacity. If the conductors and meter equipment feeding that panel are still sized for 100 amps, a 200-amp panel gives you more breaker spaces — not more power.
One caution: flickering lights and breakers that trip are not proof that you need a service upgrade. Those symptoms frequently come from a loose connection, a failing breaker, an overloaded individual circuit, or a bad device — problems that call for troubleshooting, not a larger service. We diagnose before recommending capacity work.
Every project is scoped individually. The exact work depends on the existing installation, utility requirements, your local jurisdiction, the property layout, and the capacity you're targeting — so treat this as the menu we evaluate from, not a fixed package.

A 100 amp to 200 amp service upgrade is the most common capacity request we hear from homeowners. 200 amps became the standard modern residential size because it absorbs the loads that have shown up in the last two decades: Level 2 vehicle charging, heat pumps, electric water heating, induction cooking, and shop or ADU circuits, often all in the same house.
That said, a 200 amp service upgrade isn't automatic. A load calculation should determine the required capacity — a modest home with gas heat, gas water heating, and no vehicle charging may have plenty of headroom at its existing size, and paying for capacity you won't use is not an upgrade we'll push.
It's also worth separating two things that sound alike. Panel space is how many breakers your panel can physically hold. Service capacity is how much current the utility connection, service-entrance conductors, and meter equipment can safely deliver. A full panel with adequate capacity may only need a subpanel; a panel with open spaces but a 100-amp service still can't deliver 200 amps.
Because of that, going to 200 amps often means more than installing a larger breaker panel. The service-entrance conductors, meter equipment, main disconnect, and grounding and bonding all have to support the new rating, and the utility has to disconnect and reconnect the service. We evaluate every one of those pieces before quoting the job so the estimate reflects the real project.

A panel upgrade replaces the breaker panel itself — usually because it's outdated, unsafe, full, or a known problem brand. A service upgrade increases the electrical capacity delivered to the property, which involves the service equipment ahead of and including the panel: service-entrance conductors, meter equipment, the main disconnect, and grounding and bonding. A service upgrade usually includes a new panel; a panel replacement by itself does not automatically increase your available amperage.
The rating of the main breaker is the usual starting point — it's typically the largest breaker at the top of the panel, marked 100, 125, 150, or 200. Homes with a fuse block or a split-bus panel and no single main breaker are harder to read, and the panel label isn't the whole story: the service conductors and meter equipment also have to support the rating. We verify the actual service size during the evaluation rather than relying on the sticker.
Not automatically. 200 amps is the common modern residential size because it comfortably covers an EV charger, heat pump, electric water heating, and a modern kitchen, but plenty of homes are well served at their existing capacity. A load calculation based on your home's square footage, existing equipment, and planned additions is what determines the answer.
Often yes. Many 100-amp homes can support a Level 2 charger, sometimes at a reduced charging current or with a load-management device, depending on what else is electric in the house. The load calculation decides it. If the calculation shows there isn't room, a service upgrade becomes part of the charger project.
In most cases yes, because the panel has to be rated for the new service size and the old one rarely is. We confirm what's needed during the evaluation and show it in the written scope so you know exactly what's included.

Underground services can be upgraded, but the scope differs from an overhead service — the conductors, conduit path, and utility requirements are different, and exterior work may be involved. We evaluate the existing configuration and tell you what your specific property requires and which portions fall to the utility.
